About the lesson plan
Introduction
The human skeleton can be compared to scaffolding. It is a structure that is composed of a large number of different bones, enabling us to walk, jump, and also maintain an upright posture.During the lesson students will perform a series of tasks, which will allow them to get a better understanding of the various functions of bones. By assembling a skeleton (jigsaw puzzle) from pieces and creating another one from cotton swabs, they will learn what a skeleton looks like and what functions it fulfills. When they fill out the worksheet they will find out what organs it protects. Before the lesson, they will conduct an experiment involving de-calcification of chicken bones, and then during the lesson they will discuss the results and draw conclusions. A movement game will help them to understand that thanks to bones we can move, and will also allow them to exercise their memory and motor coordination. By taking part in a quiz and practicing correct posture when performing various activities, they will learn how to take care of their bones.
Teachers have at their disposal a film featuring a specialist, which contains a number of interesting facts relating to human bones. Teachers can also make use of a multimedia presentation and instructions, which will help when discussing the various functions of bones.
Aims
- explain what a skeleton and scaffolding have in common,
